The Late president Pierre Nkurunziza was taken to hospital, after a volley ball match he attended on Saturday afternoon, although he seemed to be recovering on Sunday and was even able to converse with those around him, his health condition suddenly declined on Monday morning,  before he suffered from a cardiac arrest, even though the doctors intervened immediately, they were unable to revive him. Pierre finally kicked the bucket at a hospital in eastern Burundi.

The federal authorities has called upon citizens to observe a seven day national mourning from Tuesday, June 09, 2020, in which flags would be flown at half-mast.

There are expected suspicions about the death of the president as his wife,Denise Nkurunzia, allegedly flew to Nairobi for medical treatment of an undisclosed ailment but it was being rumored that she was suffering from COVID-19, so there are speculations that the Pierre probably didn’t die of heart attack as claimed by the government.

The late Pierre had been in power since 2005, and was due to be replaced by Evariste Ndayishimiye, who emerged winner of the election that was conducted earlier this month.

The incoming president posted on his Twitter handle “He leaves us a legacy that we will never forget and we will continue his high-quality work that he has done for our country, Burundi”
