Bollywood Singer Bappi Lahiri Is Dead

INDIAN music legend Bappi Lahiri has died at the age of 69 after suffering from breathing problems.

Lahiri was one of the country’s most iconic singers and considered a trailblazing music composer who was dubbed the “King of Bollywood Disco”.

Known for his flash fashion and groovy tunes, he was fondly known as “Bappi Da” and is credited with bringing disco music to India.

He was also known for his love of gold chains, which he often wore around his neck for luck.

Lahiri had “multiple health issues” and died in the film industry capital Mumbai late Tuesday, said Deepak Namjoshi, director of CritiCare Hospital, .

He had recovered from Covid last year – but had been hospitalised for the last month.

Bappi died from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a breathing problem that occurs when a person sleeps.

He had just been discharged from a month-long hospital stay on Monday, Namjoshi told the Press Trust of India, but was readmitted Tuesday after his condition deteriorated.

Politicians, cricketers and Bollywood stars have mourned his death, with many remembering their favourite songs.

He also voiced several characters for Hindi-language versions of Hollywood films.

Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman tweeted his condolences and called Lahiri the “Disco King of Hindi cinema”.

Bollywood megastar Akshay Kumar added that Lahiri’s voice “was the reason for millions to dance, including me”.

“Thank you for all the happiness you brought through your music,” he wrote on Twitter.
