NASU, SSANU to embark on nationwide protest, Tuesday.

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated institutions (NASU)and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) have ordered their members over the country to summon for a nationwide protest.

Prior to the recent breakdown of dialogue between the Ministers of Education and Labour, and the Joint Action Committee of the two unions.

In a circular directed, to all branches chairmen of the two unions and made available to the media in Abuja on Sunday, the unions said the protest will embark on 9th July, 2024 over the state chapters of the federation, and a national protest in Abuja on 18th July.

This notice was jointly signed by the General Secretary of NASU and National President of SSANU, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and Comrade Mohamed H.Ibrahim, respectively.

The notice read, ”The National body of the Joint   Action Committee (JAC)of NASU and SSANU met on Thursday, 4th July 2024 to appraise and take a position on the current situation in respect of the withheld (4) fours months’ salaries and other grievances of our members in Universities and Inter-University Centers”.

The National JAC met with the Honourable Minister of Education, Honourable Minister Of State for Education, Permanent Secretary; Ministry of Education, others top officials of the Ministry and National Universities Commission (NUC) on invitation.

Disheartening, the meeting with the Minister of Education has not shown satisfy obligation on the payment of the withheld salaries and resolutions of other pending complaints of the JAC of the two unions.

The Honourable Minister of State was not on seat, as we were informed that she had an urgent call from the villa, so the Permanent Secretary stood in for her.

The Permanent Secretary who stood in for her, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment could not make any commitment on the issues raised.

In a view of the Government disappointment and failure to address the complaints of NASU and SSANU, JAC has decided on a series of industrial actions which include the following;

All branches of NASU and SSANU should compulsorily hold a general meeting on Monday, 8th July, 2024 to enlighten members on the insensitivity of Government to our predicaments.

‘A National Protest’ will be held in Abuja on Thursday, 18th July, 2024 after which JAC will meet to announce a date when the strike action will embark on.
